Oh blog of mine...
Well hello there gorgeous....
Hello loves. I have been remiss again. Mostly due to law school, but partially because my family came to visit over Labor Day and my mother quite literally brought an entire minivan stuffed full of homemade Korean food packaged into individual portions. She also brought 2 flats of bottled water, 20 pounds of rice, 2 flats of eggs, 4 packages of pancake mix, 2 cans of Spam and Lord knows what else. The bottom line is, I haven't really been cooking. In fact, I haven't gone grocery shopping at all. And somehow taking snapshots of Mom's homemade bulgogi seems like cheating.
I did make a lovely red lentil and potato soup last 2 weeks ago, but just as I was about to take a picture my camera decided to go kaput. I only managed to take one dreary, bleary shot and it was just too depressing to post.
So I upped and ordered another. Camera, that is. It just arrived today, in all its violent pink glory. Which means I leave myself no excuses. You will get good pictures and fun, witty entries. Really.
I've been rather starry-eyed over all things mid-century as of late. I think its the two seasons of Mad Men and the Lifetime movie on Coco Chanel I watched while I was sick last week. (And don't yank my chain about it being a Lifetime movie. Its Shirley MacLaine, dagnabit, and I want to be Ouiser Boudreaux when I grow up. I love her).
So in lieu of food, I leave you tonight with a deliciously retro little cocktail recipe that I'm completely smitten with at the moment. Its tart and sweet, but still stings in just the right places. It practically begs for black liquid eyeliner and bare legs. Frankly, I can't think of a better cocktail on these purply, still-warm September evenings. Its somewhere between a vodka collins, an old fashioned and a lemon drop. I call it the....
Vodka Wink
2oz premium vodka
1oz Limoncello
1 sugar cube
1 thin wedge of orange
1 wedge of lime
1 Maraschino cherry
Splash of soda
Ice
1. Squeeze the wedges of orange and lime into a highball to release the juices, and drop into the glass. Gently muddle the sugar cube into the juices. Add plenty of ice, Limoncello and vodka. Add a splash of soda to top off the glass and drop in the Maraschino cherry. Stir gently to mix everything together and enjoy!
